JEWEL IN TRAFFORD’S CROWN BEGINS TO SPARKLE AGAIN

JEWEL IN TRAFFORD'S CROWN BEGINS TO SPARKLE AGAIN
Altrincham's first Big Tidy Up took place on Thursday evening, July 29th.
Organised by Altrincham resident and Lib Dem activist, Sarah Walmsley, the litter-picking event attracted 46 volunteers, comprising local residents, a local business (Informed Solutions) and a few small groups including Altrincham's 'G-force'.
Over a period of two hours, volunteers split into two to four-person teams and collected 91 bags of rubbish, including 24 bags of bottles and cans which were subsequently recycled.

The event was the first of its kind in Altrincham in terms of scale and ambition and although lots of rubbish has now disappeared, it was largely agreed by volunteers that they had only managed to scratch the surface in terms of litter collected.
Everyone enjoyed themselves and members of the public showed their appreciation along the way, so a date for the next Big Tidy Up has already been set - Sunday August 29th starting at 2.30pm. Anyone interested in taking part, should first contact the organiser through the website www.OurAltrincham.org which contains more information.
Keep Britain Tidy who provided rubbish bags and tabards, launched the Big Tidy Up campaign in September 2008 with the aim of collecting 500,000 bags of litter. So far, the initiative's TidyUp-ometer is registering 76,345 bags collected.
The event was sponsored by Fed & Watered Ltd who kindly provided a van, refreshments and marketing materials.
Trafford Council loaned the litter pickers and four members of staff also helped.
Nick Clegg announces the end of child detention
Sunday, 05 September 2010 08:36
Last week saw Nick stand in for the PM at Prime Minister’s Question Time - first Liberal to answer questions at PMQs since Lloyd George in 1922.
In it he was able to announce the closure of the family unit of Yarl’s Wood immigration centre as part of the coalition government’s pledge to end child detention. Something Liberal Democrats across the country have been campaigning on for many years – another coalition success.

From Party Leader Nick Clegg
“We need a fairer tax system. I will use your votes to cut taxes for those at the bottom and in the middle and close the loopholes for those at the top.
“We need to support our children. I will use your votes to ensure extra funding for schools, to cut class sizes and give all children a fair chance.
“We need to clean up politics. I will use your votes to reform Parliament, to deliver a fairer voting system, protect your freedoms and give you the right to sack corrupt MPs.
“We need a new economy. I will use your vote to split up the banks, get them lending again, invest in green infrastructure and so create jobs.
“This election campaign has shown us that millions of people want us to do something different this time.
“Politicians should work together to solve the nation’s biggest problems.
“That is why, whatever the outcome on Thursday, I believe we should be prepared to work together to fix the terrible state of our public finances and ensure economic stability.
“These are the key steps to a new, fairer Britain. Give me the power of your vote and we can make it happen.
“Together, we can make the difference.”

Our Liberal Democrat Beliefs
"The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives."
